MP Moawad criticizes Aoun and Nasrallah’s positions for rejecting an international investigation into Beirut explosion

The President of “The Independence Movement”, MP Michel Moawad stated the following:

“I was surprised by the positions of President Aoun and the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, who showed firm rejection of an international investigation in Beirut port explosion that killed at least 154 people, injured 5000 others, while 300.000 people had been made homeless and 60.000 houses had been devastated as well as hundreds of institutions, companies, hospitals, hotels, offices and economic infrastructure in the capital.

Therefore, I can say that Nasrallah’s position was expected but President Aoun’s position was incomprehensible because what happened in Beirut is more than a massacre, it is an extermination of a capital and its citizen. It is not a simple “accident” but it is a crime committed against the country’s population punishable by the international law and the Lebanese laws. Hence, one should not compromise on the right of the Lebanese & foreign victims’ relatives as well as the right of the Lebanese people to know the truth in order to implement justice.

With all my respect to the Lebanese tribunals and the Lebanese security, but the local investigations in different crimes and major cases did not end with any result, starting by assassinations, crimes, explosions like the assassination of President Rene Moawad and others, the assassinations of leaders of March 14, MPs, ministers, journalists and security officers, as well as corruption cases like “tainted fuel” case and many many other cases. These crimes remained with no investigation or the investigation did not end with any result. That’s why, amidst the questions and the suggested stories regarding this major crime, and the absence of confidence in the local investigations, I insist on the right of the Lebanese people to know the truth and judge the criminals, with no exceptions, who are involved in Beirut port explosion. This right will be implemented only by a transparent international investigation to show the truth and to hold all perpetrators accountable.

I confirm that this process should include every person in charge in the related successive authorities in relation with Beirut port since 2013, the date of the arrival of the ship loaded with explosive materials to Beirut in ambiguous circumstances.

Regardless the cause of the explosion of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate in Beirut port, whether it was an attack or an act of sabotage or a result of negligence, the real deal remains in the major crime of keeping and reserving theses explosive materials in the port for several years causing penal & political responsibilities on all persons in charge, with no exceptions, in the related positions since 2013.

Therefore, I ask the parliament to hold responsibility and call for an urgent session to vote for a parliamentary petition to be presented to the United Nations to ask for an international investigation committee to show the truth and hold perpetrators accountable. I will communicate MPs supporting the request of an international investigation to know the truth and implement justice.
