Moawad meets with Maronite patriarch, warns against dragging Lebanon into new conflict

Head of the Independence Movement Michel Moawad condemned Tuesday the Israeli attack on Quneitra village in the Golan Heights but warned that under no circumstances should Lebanon be dragged into a new conflict with Israel.

Moawad added that it was the responsibility of Damascus to retaliate to the Israeli strike that occurred on Syrian territory but targeted Lebanese and Syrian citizens.

Following a meeting with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai in Bkirki, Moawad said Lebanon could not afford the economic and security repercussions of a renewed conflict.

He also urged the swift election of a president and the implementation of tighter border controls to avoid the spillover of the Syrian crisis into Lebanon.
