The president of the Independence Movement Michel Moawad issued the following statement:
“With deep sadness and a grieving heart, I announce to the Lebanese and the Zghortiots the passing away of the son of the Independence hero Hamid Frangieh, former MP and thinker Samir Frangieh, one of the symbols of the ‘Independence Uprising’, of the ‘14th March’ movement and of ‘Kornet Chehwan’, and one of the architects of the ‘Bristol Gathering’ to face the Syrian tutelage.

“Zgharta and Lebanon will miss one of their prominent dialogue personalities, and one of the strongest believers in the Lebanese National Pact, and in the necessity of building a sovereign, free, independent and modern Lebanese State.

“We won’t forget Samir Frangieh, our partner in the 2000 Legislative Elections in which we challenged the Syrian tutelage and faced all the attempts of curbing and weakening us. We formed then a strong barrier in the North. We won’t forget that we were partners in the ‘Cedars Revolt’ victory, and in the 2005 Legislative Elections that kept the sovereign spirit in Zgharta alive.

“I present my condolences to Samir Frangieh’s small family, Anne, Samer and Hala, to his larger Zghortiot and Lebanese family, and to all the comrades on his path of struggles.”
